This year celebrates the 11th year of the Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT) at The University of Queensland (UQ).  The first ever 3MT was held at UQ in 2008 with 160 Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students competing.  In 2017, over 240 HDR students participated in heats held across UQ's Schools, Faculties and Institutes.

The 2018 UQ 3MT Final will be held on the evening of Wednesday 12 September and will bring together 8 finalists, representing each of UQ's 6 Faculties, the winner of the Combined-Institute competition and a Wildcard entrant.  Information of the event and attendance/viewing options are listed below:

This event will be livestreamed - further details will be provided closer to the event.

A special UQ 3MT Final livestreaming event will also be held on the St Lucia Campus.  Food, drinks and entertainment will be provided as well as lucky door prizes and one travel grant on offer for HDR students who attend.  Further details on the event will be published here once they are confirmed.

Wildcard Competition

The Wildcard Competition is where the People’s Choice winner (audience voted) from each Faculty and Combined Institute Final is given the chance to compete in a Wildcard Competition hosted by the Graduate School. The winner of the Wildcard Competition is offered the opportunity to compete in the UQ 3MT Final.

Details of the 2018 UQ Wildcard Competition are listed below:

Date: Wednesday 22 August
Time: 1:45pm registration for 2pm start.  Competition concludes at 3pm
Venue: Australian Institute for Bioengineering (#75) Seminar Room

The UQ Graduate School will award the following prizes at the 2018 UQ 3MT Final

  • Winner: $5000 grant 
  • Runner Up: $2000 grant
  • People's Choice: $1000 grant

The winner of the UQ Final will also represent UQ at the Asia-Pacific 3MT competition.

Active PhD and Professional Doctorate (Research) candidates who have successfully passed their confirmation milestone (including candidates whose thesis is under submission) by the date of their first presentation are eligible to participate in 3MT competitions at all levels, including the Asia-Pacific 3MT competition. Graduates are not eligible.

Please note: MPhil and pre-confirmation PhD candidates who are active in program are still eligible to participate in the UQ 3MT competition up to Faculty/Institute finals but cannot advance to the UQ 3MT Final.
