This year celebrates the 11th year of the Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT) at The University of Queensland (UQ).  The first ever 3MT was held at UQ in 2008 with 160 Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students competing.  In 2017, over 240 HDR students participated in heats held across UQ's Schools, Faculties and Institutes.

Final - Customs House Event - 12 September

The 2018 UQ 3MT Final will be held on the evening of Wednesday 12 September and will bring together 8 finalists, representing each of UQ's 6 Faculties, the winner of the Combined-Institute competition and a Wildcard entrant.

Time: 6pm - 7:30pm
Venue: Customs House (attendance by invitation only)

Final - Livestream Event - 12 September

A special livestreaming event of the 2018 UQ 3MT Final will be held in the Red Room at the UQ St Lucia Campus on Wednesday 12 September 2018.

Date: Wednesday 12 September
Time: 5:30pm registration for a 6pm start - event concludes at 8:30pm
Venue: Red Room, St Lucia Campus, University of Queensland

Food, drink and entertainment will be provided!

Thanks to the platinum event sponor, UniBank, $500 worth of travel grants for HDR students and several other audience prices will be on offer at the event!


Information & resources for UQ competitors


Active PhD and Professional Doctorate (Research) candidates who have successfully passed their confirmation milestone (including candidates whose thesis is under submission) by the date of their first presentation are eligible to participate in 3MT competitions at all levels, including the Asia-Pacific 3MT competition. Graduates are not eligible.

Please note: MPhil and pre-confirmation PhD candidates who are active in program are still eligible to participate in the UQ 3MT competition up to Faculty/Institute finals but cannot advance to the UQ 3MT Final.
